Fabricio Werdum: Mark Hunt said "stop, cease, cease" after the flying knee

Grappling expert Fabricio Werdum knocked out K1 champ Mark Hunt to win the UFC interim heavyweight title in Mexico at UFC 180 on Nov. 15, and the flying knee that stopped the fight was one of “Vai Cavalo’s” secret weapons for Hunt.

“Everything was planned and trained,” Werdum told MMAFighting.com. “Master Rafael Cordeiro instructed me go that one day. I asked him ‘master, can I do this in the fight?’ And he explained ‘you must do it in the fight.’

Ricardo Lamas: Conor McGregor "needs to fight a wrestler like me" before getting a title shot

MEXICO CITY — Despite being the higher ranked and more seasoned fighter, Ricardo Lamas entered his UFC 180 featherweight match-up as the betting underdog to Dennis Bermudez. While those odds appear somewhat strange in retrospect, especially considering it took Lamas a little over three minutes to bring Bermudez’s vaunted seven-fight win streak to a screeching halt, Lamas now wants to repeat the favor against the conductor of division’s boldest hype train.

“I want to get back to the title shot,” Lamas said at UFC 180’s post-fight press conference.

In the main event of UFC 180 to determine in the interim UFC heavyweight champion in Mexico City, Mexico, it was the Spanish-speaking Brazilian Fabricio Werdum who would walk away with the gold. He stopped Mark Hunt in the second round via TKO.

UFC 180 results: Augusto Montano stops Chris Heatherly with barrage of knees

Fan favorite Augusto Montano gave the crowd in Mexico City at UFC 180 what they wanted, dispatching Chris Heatherly with an onslaught of knees in the first round of their main card bout.

Heatherly was able to secure the takedown early and after shucking off a Montano armbar attempt, passed to side control. But Montano faked him out, showing he was going to half guard, but rolled out the opposite way. The two eventually clinched along the fence with the bigger Montano being the aggressor. A knee up the middle badly hurt Heatherly, which helped the Mexican plant Heatherly on his back and attempt to pass.

Brotherhood unites UFC 180"s unexpected trilogy

MEXICO CITY — For the most part, Alejandro Perez and Jose Quinonez agree on what happened in their first fight. It was three years ago, in an unsanctioned Mexico brawl that slipped through the Fight Finder cracks, and “El Diablito,” as Perez is known, was a few weeks removed from suffering a nasty cut in another fight. He definitely wasn’t ready, and perhaps was more than a little overconfident, but Quinonez was new to the game and Perez needed money, so hey, what the hell? He figured it’d be an easy night.

That was all well and good until “Teco,” as Quinonez affectionately goes by, split Perez’s cut open with an elbow and submitted his foe with a quickness.
