On a media blitz in New York City Thursday, professional wrestling’s CM Punk began opening up a bit more on the early conversations held with UFC president Dana White prior to his joining the promotion earlier in December.

The WWE star has taken a mountain of flak for his choice to cannonball into MMA’s grandest stage at 36 with no resume to speak of, but Punk says he was willing to endure the entry level tournament that is ‘The Ultimate Fighter.’

Live Chat: UFC 180 & Bellator 131 results, Brock Lesnar rumors, Roufusport controversy and more

Welcome to the Promotional Malpractice Live Chat, episode 113.

Seriously, it’s hard to know where to start with this given the amount of topics and issues going on in the sport. I suppose first and foremost would be actual fight results. UFC 180 saw Fabricio Werdum earn a version of UFC gold, Kelvin Gastelum cement himself as a true contender and Ricardo Lamas affirm himself as a top featherweight fixture.

Bellator 131 salaries: Tito Ortiz banks $300,000 for win over Stephan Bonnar

It looks like post-UFC life is treating Tito Ortiz just fine. Ortiz banked a hefty $300,000 purse for his split decision victory over fellow UFC Hall of Famer Stephan Bonnar in the headlining bout of Saturday’s Bellator 131 event, according to information released to Sherdog.com by the California State Athletic Commission.

Bonnar took home $100,000 in the losing effort, although he could have doubled that amount had he defeated Ortiz.

UFC 180 results: Yair Rodriguez decisions Leonardo Morales to become "The Ultimate Fighter: Latin America" featherweight winner

In the battle to determine the winner of the featherweight ‘The Ultimate Fighter: Latin America’, finalists Leonardo Morales and Yair Rodriguez battled for three rounds, but it was the Mexican Rodriguez who’d emerge victorious at UFC 180 on Saturday night.

Morales took center of the cage, but Rodriguez used a lunging punch and push into the cage to trip Morales to the mat where he ended up in full mount. As Morales spun, Rodriguez sunk both hooks to the take the back. Morales was able to escape, but ended up in two armbar attempts, both of which Morales was able to escape.

UFC 179 fight card: What Is at stake?

Conor McGregor is apparently getting an outrageous level of glow in the lead-up to the occasion, however this can be actually about featherweight champ Jose Aldo. He could be the last remaining Brazilian winner. I’d never go as far as proposing the market falls because state without him, but I’d underscore it could be more problematic than some understand. Every state enjoys and must find their countrymen do nicely, but Brazil appears to put additional emphasis on it (I do not understand if that is reasonable, but that is my read from afar). Keeping the title may be crucial to UFC’s attempts to nurture what’s among their top three markets.

None of this can be to undercut the realities in the floor. There are enormous swathes of ability across all weight classes there. The TV handle Globo is a godsend. But having winners – main combatants – is very important to a nation that turned around on MMA at a time when numerous Brazilians were enormous stars or belt holders and will lead a fresh upsurge in interest.

Jamie Varner returns from broken ankle, fights Drew Dober at UFC on FOX 13

The last time fight fans saw Jamie Varner, he was struggling to stay upright while somehow — amazingly — continuing to mount desperation offense against James Krause last May. This, despite the fact that Varner suffered a bad brake in his left ankle and several torn ligaments in his left foot.

Varner ultimately lost the fight due to doctor’s stoppage at the conclusion of the first round, but despite his now three-fight losing streak, UFC officials were impressed enough with the grittiness of the former WEC lightweight champ to bring him back, as Varner has been scheduled to challenge Drew Dober at UFC on FOX 13 in his hometown of Phoenix, AZ.
