It is been a while, but Junior dos Santos can grin again

PHOENIX, Ariz. — It did not take long for that old, goofy smile to creep back across Junior dos Santos’ face.

Fourteen months after Cain Velasquez ground him into an unrecognizable and bloody paste, seven months after his superhuman framework did not make its Brazilian homecoming, the guy they used to call o campeao danced his fiendish dance over the blue canvas at Wednesday’s UFC on FOX 13 open work outs, showing once again that there is few more frightening to observe carton the shadows.

Morning Report: Dana White looking to publication CM Punk against "a man who"s 1-0, 1-1, 2-1"

We do not understand why, when, what weight or against who, but CM Punk certainly will fight in the UFC.

The why (cash), when (mid 2015), weight (185 pounds), where (Chicago, Illinois) can all sort of be deduced, but who the former WWE star will face in the Octagon is an infinitely more interesting question.

Tyron Woodley discusses performing career, job in NWA movie "Straight Outta Compton"

Tyron Woodley may just be 32 years old, however he is already preparing for his post-fighting life. The UFC’s No. 3 ranked welterweight, Woodley lately finished filming his part in the coming NWA biopic ‘Straight Outta Compton,’ and he described his encounter working alongside the rap legends as nothing short of “surreal.”

“It was kind of mad,” Woodley said on Monday’s version of The MMA Hour. “I am sitting on set and Ice Cube’s coming up and speaking to me, asking me [questions]. There were a couple scenes where it was only me and the two lead actors, therefore it absolutely was truly just like a superb cozy set.

After scoring deal he could not refuse, Nick Diaz wonders why he accepted fights against "average degree competitors"

When Nick Diaz retired in March 2013 fresh from losing a lopsided unanimous decision to then-UFC welterweight champ Georges St-Pierre, he told reporters that the only fights to could coax him back to the cage will be a rematch contrary to the Canadian or a superfight against Anderson Silva. At that time, Diaz’s requests were mostly scoffed at. This is a man who had lost two straight trips; he was not just in the position to barter for another huge chance.

But a funny thing occurred in the 16 months that followed that night. St Pierre retired, lifting the curtain to the sport’s drug outbreak on his way outside; Silva lost simply not once, but twice in outrageous manner; Chael Sonnen unceremoniously left the limelight; a rash of harms sailed from the other side of the UFC’s top echelon; the promotion’s fading draws disappeared only somewhat more.

Luke Rockhold: "Not a opportunity" Jon Jones ever defeats Cain Velasquez

it is been years since Jon Jones first teased an ultimate move up to heavyweight. With his lanky 6-foot-4 body and UFC-greatest 84.5-inch reach, the reigning light heavyweight champion and No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter in the sport has consistently considered he had be competitive in MMA’s hardest-striking department.

But now, using the UFC’s 205-pound weight class, at most, two or three fights away from being cleared out, Jones has started plotting out a path for his future which includes possible superfights against heavyweight’s elite. So that begs a interesting question: could Jones stack up nicely against heavyweight champ Cain Velasquez in the event the two met in a hit fight next year?

Metamoris 5 predictions

The fifth installment of the grappling superfight event kicks off from Long Beach, California on Saturday, with a legendary ‘rematch’ of two MMA icons headlining the event. Renzo Gracie looks to avenge his PRIDE 10 MMA loss against ‘The Gracie Hunter’ Kazushi Sakuraba while UFC welterweight Rory MacDonald will try his hand at this kind of competition for the first time. The event also features notable names like Garry Tonon and Keenan Cornelius.

Will Sakuraba notch one more win over the Gracie family or is Renzo ready to get redemption? I answer these questions and more with my predictions for Saturday’s matches.

Garry Tonon, jiu-jitsu"s consummate risk taker, prepares for Zak Maxwell

Metamoris’ existence is predicated on a number of things, not least of which is that submission-only competition can offer a truer (or at least alternative) glimpse into the talents of practitioners, something the points system obscures. That’s not necessarily true in all cases for all competitors, but it’s true enough that having a superfight series in a submission-only format fills the gap left by the points-based tournaments.

Whether true or not, that argument has little bearing on how Tom DeBlass black belt Garry Tonon competes. In a sport allegedly filled with those who embrace risk aversion as a means to winning, Tonon has patented a style that eschews that approach completely. As a result, he’s developed a fan following, too.

Jon Jones, Anderson Silva spar at UFC"s headquarters

The most anticipated superfight in mixed martial arts history went down on a cold Monday night in Las Vegas… kinda.

Fresh from appearances at the UFC’s ‘The Time is Now’ press conference, light heavyweight champ Jon Jones and former middleweight great Anderson Silva collided in a two-hour long sparring session at UFC headquarters, and afterwards both men were all smiles as Silva sung the praises of this “f*cking crazy guy.”

Jon Jones is thinking of superfights, but "would never want to fight Anderson" Silva

LAS VEGAS – Jon Jones is close to the point in his title reign that all long-term champions inevitably reach, the one in which they start thinking about superfights.

But Jones, who defends his UFC light heavyweight championship against Daniel Cormier in the main event of UFC 182 on Jan. 3, is forever ruling out talk one of such fight right away: Don’t expect him to square off with Anderson Silva.

UFC 180 results: Ricardo Lamas submits Dennis Bermudez with first-round guillotine

In a battle of world-class featherweights looking for a title opportunity, the division stalwart in Ricardo Lamas would prove superior, submitting Dennis Bermudez in the first round at UFC 180.

Lamas kicked off the fight landing leg kicks and moving while Bermudez responded with punches and a clinch. He pressed Lamas against the fence in a 50-50 position and Lamas was able to laterally turn and escape. Bermudez briefly had a front headlock on Lamas, who slipped on the canvas, but Lamas escaped. A front kick from Lamas knocked Bermudez off balance, which also allowed Lamas to lock up his own front head lock. Bermudez scrambled to his feet and they moved into the clinch, again with Lamas back against the cage.

This time Roy Nelson was on the receiving end of Hunt’s theatrics, and, well, it was a doozy.

Both Nelson as well as the 40-year old Kiwi looked to headhunt early, trading significant exchanges but only falling short of the mark throughout the initial round. Nelson favored his brand his overhand right, the exact same shot that’s starched a lot of colossi, while Hunt mixed things up with looping rights and lefts.
